Virtual Spring Break: Milwaukee, five ways

Today’s assignment for the Virtual Spring Break travel writing class is to come up with five angles on a city, five different travel stories. One of my favorite cities is Milwaukee, and here are five reasons why:

  • Milwaukee is a music town. Besides local bands playing local bars, and a Stradivarius violin that was the subject of a recent theft, Milwaukee is the home of Summerfest, quite possibly the greatest summer music festival anywhere. Each year, top bands play for eleven days on multiple stages for one low admission price.
  • Milwaukee is rich in arts. You can see masterpieces at the Milwaukee Public Museum, experimental works in loft studios, and great stage performances. Because the cost of living is lower than in Chicago, Milwaukee attracts artists looking for inexpensive space and a good quality of life.
  • The Pfister Hotel is possibly the cheapest five-star hotel in the country. As an added bonus, it’s where the professional athletes stay when playing the Bucks and the Brewers. And yes, Milwaukee is great for sports.
  • There’s a lot of outdoors – Lake Michigan is stunning, and Kettle Moraine State Park has great hiking and camping.
  • And, of course, Milwaukee has beer – macrobrews at Miller, microbrews all over the place, even microbrewed pop at Sprecher.
