Today’s assignment for Kristine Hansen’s virtual spring break class is to discuss a place in a conversational tone. Well, last night I was at a baseball game at Wrigley, so here goes:
Wrigley Field gets a bad rap as a place where people go to drink rather than watch baseball. That’s not true; it attracts serious baseball fans. You see people there with scorecards, not that day’s giveaway, because the team owners are too cheap to do good giveaways. It’s a place to hang out and watch some serious baseball.
Well, actually, there hasn’t been serious baseball there in a while. The new team owners seem more interested in bringing in bells and whistles than improving the quality of the players. The fans are mostly in place because this season is better than last, but it remains to be seen how long that will last. We hear stories about an improved farm system but then watch sad play on the field. Maybe it’s time to call people up?
Baseball fans love to visit Wrigley Field because it is a place about baseball. If it becomes just another family entertainment emporium, will it still be Wrigley? If you’re a real fan, you need to get there soon. Have an Old Style and a slice of Giordano’s pizza, get a scorecard, and complain about the Ricketts family. That’s the Chicago way.
