Recapping Velvet: Season 1, Episode 12, “The Visitor”

Velvet PosterWarning: there are many, many spoilers about the Spanish drama Velvet ahead. You can see it on Netflix.

At the end of Episode 11, Don Emilio was on the floor of the shop. It turns out that he is alive, and the doctor orders him to stay in bed for a week. His situation is so serious that Doña Blanca tells Ana to stop working and sit with her uncle to make sure he stays in bed.

Up in the office, the board of directors is meeting. Patricia is not happy to discover that Gerardo now has controlling interest. In fact, Alberto and her mother ganged up against her to dilute her power. After the board meeting, the something approximating a marketing department meets. The members are Alberto, Cristina, Raul, and Mateo. Alberto shows them the latest issue of a gossip magazine. Princess Grace is in town! If only they could get her to wear a dress from Velvet. Guess what? Raul knows her from when he worked in Paris. He promises to get her into the store, and he sends Pedro off with a gift of shoes and a scarf.

Alberto and Patricia discuss the sale of shares. Alberto apologizes for not telling her in advance. He askes her to fill in as acting sales manager until Emilio recovers. Patricia is thrilled.

Doña Blanca gets a call from Carmen and goes looking for Devastatingly Handsome Maximiliano. He is on his way to dinner and invites Blanca to join him. They go to the bar, get a little drunk, and return to their own rooms.

Rita takes Clara to the audition for the TV commercial. Clara is terrible but gets the part anyway. Don Sergio takes her out to celebrate. Of course, he wants sex, so the night ends early—and so does Clara’s acting career. She uses her fee to buy a TV. Rita organizes a soccer viewing party, but Pedro cannot bear to be around her.

Back at Marquez Manor, Alberto, Cristina, and Gloria meet with the priest who is to marry them. He asks a lot of questions about why Alberto and Cristina are getting married. Awkward! Alberto and Cristina decamp for the backyard and some product-placement Coca-Cola. Alberto says that maybe they just don’t know each other very well, so Cristina suggests that they play a game and ask each other questions. After discussing their scars and why Alberto’s father sent him to London, they decide that they are in love.

The questions to make someone fall in love with you work that well! Apparently.

The next day, Clara avoids telling Mateo about the audition. While they banter, the phone rings: Princess Grace’s secretary is calling for Raul. The princess wants to visit the store. She asks that the store be closed to the public and that no photographers be present. Raul wants Clara to model the dresses, but Mateo calls in someone else. Mateo and Rita are then in the elevator, and Rita tells him all. Because of course she does.

Ana sits with the sleeping Don Emilio. She decides to read the letters from Alberto. Because of course she does.

Princess Grace arrives. Raul gives her a tour, and then there’s a little fashion show. Grace says that she loves the clothes but could not wear them in her role as princess. She leaves Velvet, but photographers have arrived and get shots of her leaving the store. Mission accomplished!

Up in the workroom, Rita tells everyone that Grace isn’t all that pretty, especially after having children, because we all know that pregnancy ruins your looks. This comment sends Luisa into her room, crying. Guess what? Luisa is pregnant.

Mateo goes to talk to that snake Sergio. Sergio says mean things about Clara, so Mateo slugs him. Back in the office, Clara tends to Mateo’s wounds, giving them plenty of time to flirt.

Alberto shows up at Emilio’s room to talk to Ana. The two star-crossed lovers go up to the roof. Alberto tells Ana that the paperwork with the church is complete and that the wedding to Cristina is going forward. And yet, Alberto insists that Ana is the most important thing that ever happened to him and that they will be together someday. They kiss.

Apparently the questions to make someone fall in love with you don’t guarantee that they will stay in love with you.
