Questioning Conventional Wisdom on China and Entrepreneurism

While I am in Chengdu, I am trying to talk to anyone I can who is part of this new economy here. One person I talked to asked me what my article was going to be about, and I told him that I didn’t know because I hadn’t talked to enough people yet.

But this is interesting: I recently talked to a software developer who had a good freelance business, who was building a name for himself with iPhone app games, who used to work at a major U.S. software company. He has not told his parents that he has quit to go on his own that because that would bring shame to the family.

Did I mention that he lives at home?

Anyway, there are some wrinkles to the conventional wisdom, and I am trying to sort through it all. The people in Chengdu are really nice, though, so I am having fun doing it.
