Blogging, #FoundAPenny

pennyLast night, I attended an event for bloggers at the Lill Street Art Center here in Chicago. The speakers maintain What’s the T, The Hooded Utilitarian, and Letters from Elba. They talked about why they blog and emphasized that the writing comes first – that this is a way to get the writing out there.

I’ve always been a reluctant blogger, despite now having two that I regularly maintain and another two that I own and may do something with someday. I’d rather have someone else doing the editing, publishing, and promotion, but that industry model is dead. So, in the meantime, this is it.

Without other people commissioning the work, I end up writing for myself and hoping that people find it. You’re here, so it worked, yes?

One of the questions for the panel last night was how they would get their work down to one hashtag. I realized that I had mine, #FoundAPenny, which I use on Twitter to record money that I find when I am out and about. (It adds up, too – $11.73 for the year to date.) For a blogger who does not do a heck of a lot of promotion, that’s the serendipity.

What’s your #FoundAPenny?
