Advice for Freelancers: Jerry Seinfeld’s Productivity Secret

During the 2012 Blogathon, I started keeping track of my work using a little tip I picked up from Jerry Seinfeld via Lifehacker. Here’s what he recommends for getting into a new habit: get a calendar and then cross off the squares for each day that you do whatever it is you want to do. After a while, you’ll see a whole bunch of Xs, and you’ll want to keep going in order to keep from breaking the chain.

Seinfeld recommended using a full-year wall calendar and a red marker. I printed out a monthly calendar from Outlook and used whatever pen was sitting nearby. Every day that I wrote a post, I placed an X, so I could see clearly how many posts I had done and how many more I had to do to continue.

It worked so well that I printed out June’s calendar and kept on blogging, and I set up a second calendar to track exercise. How much longer will I keep it up either or both? At least until I come up with another habit that I want to establish day by day.
