Virtual Spring Break: DIY on vacation

Today’s assignment for Kristine Hansen’s Virtual Spring Break travel writing class is to come up with ideas for a travel story around a trend. Well, here’s one: the DIY trend and DIY on vacation.

When we travel, we often forget that we can do things that locals are doing, too. When my son was younger, he did a football camp in my hometown when visiting my parents. Many places have cooking schools, craft workshops, and lecture programs that add an interesting, and local, angle to the trip.

I don’t have a fleshed out list here, just the idea: when you’re going somewhere, see if there is something that you can do. Check the museums for family workshops. Look for one-day cooking classes. For craft classes, see if you’ll be able to take your project home at the end of the session – a one-day knitting workshop is probably a better choice than a ceramics class!

It’s all a way of getting out and seeing something different. And that is a big part of travel.
